ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION

SYNERGETIC SERIES 2006

Environmental Stimulation is inspired by the sustainable philosophies and design science of visionary, Buck Minster Fuller.

Environmental Stimulation - Synergetic Series is inspired by the sustainable philosophies and designs of visionary Buck Minster Fuller.

Fuller studied the inner geometries of the universe to design sustainable structures and cities which focused on the synergy of the health of the planet, individuals and communities.

The Synergetic forms, as sculpture, illustrate the motion of making, singular cells lay idle until fused together with others to form a whole. The act of hot construction, orchestrated by the team becomes a metaphor for the scientifically based ‘poetics of experience’.

Elements join together at the point of least resistance, the strength and integrity of form becoming a witness to the materiality of consciousness and unconsciousness.

I am interested in creating environments that challenge our perception of the reality we exist in. Working with light, kinetics, illusion, sound and multi-media, I work towards inducing a phenomenological response from the viewer.

This installation titled ‘Environmental Stimulation’ was made up of 85 synergetic forms laced upon a stainless-steel structure 3m x 3.5m.

Each piece of steel was hand cut and hand pressed, and each hook used to attach the forms was hand bent using a custom jig and soldered.

A 1000-watt stage light shone upon the rotating sculpture casting a three-dimensional shadow upon the two-dimensional brick wall that stood behind.

An interdimensional language was created between the fourth dimensionality of the material glass it’s three-dimensional moving shadow cast upon the two-dimensional wall.

The projected shadow was larger than the viewer, when watching the shadow an illusion of volume was created, the wall disappeared and was replaced by space.

One had the sensation of the orb absorbing you.
