Ideas revolving around body adornment have been present in Ruth Allen’s consciousness throughout her career. Holding strong physical and spiritual ties to Aotearoa (New Zealand) Ruth’s tooth necklaces make direct reference to her south pacific origin. Whale, sharks, animal & human teeth were worn as adornment in tribal rituals. The type and number of teeth was a display of wealth, status and when worn spiritually guarded the bearer from evil. Ruth uses a torch and flameworking techniques to create each glass tooth. These teeth are then threaded onto a hand plaited waxed cotton chord and secured around the neck using a custom made glass toggle.

Average length of necklace 60cm

Each tooth 0.6 – 2.4cm (variable)
