Battuto Amulets | 2006 - 2007

Amulets | Jewellery thought to give protection against evil, danger or disease.

Ideas revolving around body adornment have been present in Ruth’s consciousness throughout her career. Holding strong physical and spiritual ties to Aotearoa (New Zealand) Ruth’s Amulets contain direct reference to her south pacific origin.

Process | The Battuto series are created from slicing the top section off a blown vessel, the slice is on an angle shifting the colour and weight of the piece off centre. These slices are then carved on a lathe using various grades of diamond wheels. To complete the work Ruth plaits a waxed cotton chord and secures a custom made glass toggle for fastening around the neck.
